The outward signs of a mental illness are often behavioural. A person may be extremely quiet or withdrawn. Conversely, they may burst into tears, have great anxiety or have outbursts of anger. Even after treatment has started, some individuals with a mental illness can exhibit anti-social behaviours.
Mental health conditions can cause a wide range of symptoms, and each condition has its own signs and symptoms. Some common symptoms include:
- Mood: Persistent sadness, feelings of hopelessness, or extreme mood swings
- Energy: Decreased energy, fatigue, or significant tiredness
- Sleep: Difficulty sleeping, sleeping too much, or disrupted sleep
- Appetite: Appetite or weight changes, or an unhealthy focus on body type
- Thinking: Confused thinking, reduced ability to concentrate, or unusual or “magical” thinking
- Behaviour: Social withdrawal, avoiding friends and activities, or thoughts or behaviours that interfere with work, family, or social life
- Perception: Detachment from reality (delusions), paranoia, or hallucinations
- Emotions: Excessive fear or worry, excessive guilt, or feelings of low self-worth
- Substances: Misuse of alcohol, drugs, or both
